Chronic Back Pain: A Guide for Patients and Families

Why can’t you fix chronic back pain?

Many people go to their doctor expecting an easy fix for their back pain. Doctors have developed so many amazing technologies, so why can’t they target pain?

The answer may surprise you. Medicine is not able to reach the parts of cells that produce chronic pain. The cells producing your pain are not cancerous. They are normal, living nerve cells that are overactive or malfunctioning. Destroying these nerve cells is not a good idea because we need these same cells to send other pain, temperature, and touch signals. The key to understanding chronic pain is to think of chronic pain as coming from an over-active and over-responsive nervous system.
