Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a group of inherited disorders involving connective tissue in the body. People with EDS typically have loose joints and stretchy skin. Symptoms of EDS can include joint pain or popping, joint dislocation or instability, flat feet, back pain, and easily bruised or stretchy skin.
Physical and occupational therapists participate in interdisciplinary care by developing safe strengthening and stabilization exercises to improve joint stability and activity tolerance. Custom splints can be made to stabilize joints of the wrist and hand. Therapists can recommend adaptive devices which will aide in reducing stress on joints while still allowing patients to perform daily, work, or sport activities.
