Amniocentesis/chorionic villus sampling


We will call you as soon as we have your test results. The time it takes to get results depends on the tests that are ordered with your procedure. Most of the time the tests that are ordered are:

About 48 hours
Karyotype (traditional chromosome studies)
About 2 weeks
Chromosome microarray
About 10 days

Care at Home

Call the Fetal Diagnosis Clinic if you have:

  • Bleeding or leaking of fluid from the vagina
  • Severe stomach pain
  • A fever over 100. 4° F (38.0° C)
  • Flu like symptoms, such as muscle aches, chills, or nausea/vomiting


Your nurse and/or a pharmacist will talk with you about your medicine(s) before you go home.


Eat and drink as normal.


Do not lift over 15 pounds for 24 hours after your procedure.

Other information

You may have some cramping of the uterus after this procedure. It may last up to 24 hours. It often gets better on its own. Take Tylenol® as needed.
