Information for queer individuals

The University of Iowa LGBTQ clinic welcomes queer individuals.

The UI LGBTQ clinic is committed to honoring and affirming your unique identity. Many people are choosing to identify with the term queer as opposed to a more specific label. We strive to create an environment that does not attempt to put you into a well defined box. It is our mission to understand your individual health needs and provide you with exceptional care.

noun

  1. an umbrella term for anyone who identifies with this word and feels outside of society's norms for gender or sexuality. It is important to note that some lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender people may not identify with this term and may still find it hurtful.
  2. originally a derogatory term for a gay person; in the 1980s the term started to be reclaimed by some in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in an effort to bond together to create a movement of full acceptance.
