Mycophenolate mofetil

Also known as CellCept, mycophenolate mofetil works by suppressing your immune system. It is a pill that you will take by mouth.

Side effects of mycophenolate mofetil

  • Stomach upset
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting (throwing up)

Call your doctor if you have any of these, or notice blood or darkening of your stools.

Rare but serious side effects of mycophenolate mofetil

  • A drop in your white blood cell count, which leads to a higher risk of infections.
  • Liver damage
    • We will check your liver function
  • Higher risk of some cancers, such as lymphoma and skin cancer

Call your doctor if you have a fever that does not go away, chills, fatigue, weight loss, or swollen glands.

Blood work and mycophenolate mofetil

You will need blood work done while on mycophenolate mofetil. We will check for rare infections before starting this medicine, such as tuberculosis, HIV, and hepatitis B and C. You will need blood work often right after you start. Long term, you need blood work every few months to check for medicine effects.
