The Main Operating Room is divided into 3 subunits: Second Stage Recovery (SSR), Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and the Operating Room (OR). Volunteers in SSR will closely assist nursing staff with transporting patients, comforting children and patients before/after surgery, transporting medical supplies, and chart return/retrieval. Volunteers in ECT work alongside nurses to help psychiatric patients recover following ETC procedures. Duties include connecting patients to monitors, patient repositioning, stripping patient beds, and cleaning surfaces between patients. Volunteers in the OR work alongside staff to help turnover operating rooms in between surgeries. This task includes wiping down surfaces and helping to set up for the next incoming surgery. Volunteers who have 20 hours in the OR can observe a procedure.
All prospective Main Operating Room volunteers will attend a large group orientation, where they will receive general University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics information. Volunteers will also attend small group orientation to receive training and information specific to their subunit. The OR requires “sterile environment training.” Finally, all volunteers must spend a complete shift with an experienced volunteer mentor before “earning their wings” (more information about the mentor program will be provided during orientation).
The dress code for ECT and SSR is a Volunteer Services polo, khaki pants, and closed-toe shoes. Shirts are available for purchase at Wild Rose Gifts (Main Entrance Lobby) Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The dress code for volunteers in the OR are scrubs, bouffant, and surgical mask that will be provided when on the unit. Volunteers must follow the professional appearance policy, which includes wearing the volunteer badge at all times.
SSR is open to volunteers Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. ECT is open to volunteers Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The OR is open to volunteers Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The OR also allows two volunteers at once.
