Excellence in Clinical Coaching honorees announced

Date: Tuesday, May 24, 2022

We are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2022 Excellence in Clinical Coaching award, presented May 20. The residency and fellowship programs at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics provide top-quality clinical education because of the dedication of individual faculty members. This institutional award provides an opportunity for program directors to recognize the contribution of faculty members whose passion and outstanding performance in clinical coaching guides the next generation of physicians.

Jaclyn Haugsdal, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences

“When she joined the faculty, she spent countless hours of her own time structuring a unique wet lab curriculum that is now one of the leading curricula of its kind in the country. Beyond the standard wet lab, she devotes even more time and resources to creating subject-specific wet labs for residents to gain further skills. This is far beyond the expectation of her role, but she does it because her greatest desire is to help us become the surgeons we long to be.”

Academic Profile

Erin Howe, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics - General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine

Associate Program Director, Pediatric Residency Program, Stead Family Department of Pediatrics

“When I find myself in a difficult patient encounter, I think of Dr. Howe and how she would handle the situation. This brings me peace and confidence in handling whatever it may be. Dr. Howe encourages residents to be themselves. She does not mold residents into replicas of herself, but rather she fosters an environment that encourages residents to become the best version of themselves as a growing pediatrician.”

Academic Profile

Andrea Weber, MD, MME

Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Internal Medicine

“Trainees see her express true compassion, empathy, and respect for a marginalized patient population, often defined by their addictions rather than the individual human beings that they are. In both her roles, Dr. Weber doesn’t just serve as an educator, but also as an example to me and other training physicians to aspire toward.”

Academic Profile

Jeffrey Wilson, MD

Clinical Professor, Internal Medicine - Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Occupational Medicine

Associate Director, Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Fellowship Program

“As a lecturer, his enthusiasm for learning is infectious. He creates an inclusive learning environment that encourages participation and stimulates discussion. As an attending physician, he is empathetic and caring. He takes his time with every patient, and it is very clear that compassionate care is a cornerstone of his practice.”
