For the 33rd year in a row, University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics has been recognized as the only hospital in Iowa to achieve a national ranking by U.S. News & World Report.
The newly released 2022-2023 U.S. News rankings also list eight specialties at UI Hospitals & Clinics within the top 10% of programs nationally, identified as “high-performing.”
- Cancer – High-performing
- Ear, Nose, and Throat – 31st
- Gastroenterology and GI surgery – High-performing
- Geriatrics – High-performing
- Ophthalmology – 7th
- Orthopedics – High-performing
- Pulmonary and lung surgery – High-performing
- Urology – High-performing
Notably, two of these specialties are ranked as a top 50 program within the country, with Ophthalmology ranking seventh nationally and Ear, Nose, and Throat ranking 31st nationally.
For the 2022-2023 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions. Fewer than half of all hospitals received at least one high-performing rating. Methodology for the rankings changes significantly each year, with new criteria introduced for the 2022-2023 rankings such as COVID-19 impact on care delivery.
“While specific program rankings may change year from year, one thing remains the same: our U.S. News ranking as Iowa’s No. 1 hospital,” says Hunter. “This matters because it reflects our dedication to serving patients across the entire state of Iowa, our region, as well as the nation. Every day, our faculty and staff provide advanced and often complex care in every specialty for adults and children—care that Iowans need and depend on. We are a resource and referral center for other hospitals and health systems across the state. When Iowans need us, we’re here, and we couldn’t be prouder to receive national recognition for our service.”
