Blood DrawThe Department of Pathology is an internationally recognized academic department. Our mission is to provide leadership in all three of the activities of an academic pathology department, namely: patient care, education and scholarship.

The Clinical Laboratories are well recognized for providing outstanding and comprehensive care to the patients we serve. The breadth and depth of services provided are amongst the best in the country. The broad spectrum and quality of our teaching programs for medical students biomedical scientists are widely recognized. Similarly, there is outstanding scholarship in the department with international recognition for our research in the field of immunology and tumor biology.

  • Last March, Jon Maakestad, a safety compliance specialist who runs the reagent lab of the Department of Pathology, received a call with one important question: Could the lab produce the reagent necessary for COVID-19 testing? Fast forward to today, and the reagent lab is churning out 600 to 1000 test kits every day.
  • University of Iowa Health Care now has in-house capability to conduct highly accurate serology (antibody) testing for COVID-19. These tests detect the presence of antibodies to the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, and can be used to determine whether a person has had COVID-19.
