Wheelchair Seating Clinic

If you need a specialized wheelchair or other mobility equipment, the University of Iowa Health Care Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Interdisciplinary Wheelchair Seating Clinic will help you choose the right equipment. This equipment can have a major impact on how you live your life every day.

Making the right choice can depend on a number of different factors, such as:

  • The reason for your mobility impairment and other physical conditions
  • What you want to be able to do while you use the wheelchair
  • Your posture and balance when you sit in the wheelchair
  • The condition of your skin where your body comes into contact with the wheelchair
  • Any pain you’re feeling

The Wheelchair Seating Clinic will help you choose the most appropriate equipment for your needs.

Most insurance companies will ask you to get a wheelchair evaluation before they will provide you with coverage. Our staff has advanced training and experience in doing these evaluations and in making sure the process is completed properly.

Wheelchair Seating Clinic Services

We use our expertise to help you decide which device is right for you. Here’s what to expect when you’ve been referred to our clinic:

  • After your provider has referred you to the Wheelchair Seating Clinic, we will contact you and schedule your visit.
  • When we contact you to schedule the visit, we’ll ask you if you have already chosen a wheelchair supplier. If you have, we will invite the supplier to attend your visit. If you haven’t already chosen a supplier, we will provide you with a list of options near you to choose from.
  • Your visit will probably take about 90 minutes. You’ll meet with a team that includes a doctor who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation, a physical therapist, and the wheelchair supplier.
  • This team will gather your history and goals, perform a thorough physical exam and functional assessment, and discuss its recommendations with you.
  • You will have the opportunity to try some equipment to help you make the best decision.
  • After your visit, the wheelchair supplier will verify funding and costs and then contact you to arrange the delivery of the equipment to you.
  • Follow-up visits with the physical therapist are available after the delivery of your equipment. We can check to make sure your new device has been set up and configured properly, and we offer wheelchair skills training for people who need it.

Our goal is to help you find the mobility equipment that works best for the way you want to live while maximizing your function and reducing the potential for complications.

Our Wheelchair Seating Clinic Can Also Assist With:

  • Pressure mapping, which provides a visual computer analysis of the pressure points when your body is seated in a wheelchair
  • Modifications to your current wheelchair if your condition changes
  • Training with your new or current mobility device to ensure safety, optimize efficiency, and minimize complications
