About us

Mission Cancer + Blood part of University of Iowa Health Care is Iowa’s largest community oncology practice dedicated to exceptional patient care and cutting-edge research. As a recognized leader in the oncology & hematology industry, we are committed to fostering a collaborative and innovative environment that empowers our team to make a meaningful impact on the lives of our patients.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Provide complete patient assessment, including vital signs, patient history, and review of systems.
  • Gather and assess objective and subjective data while providing direct nursing care.
  • Document data and assessments in the patient record using computer systems and information technology.
  • Educate patients and families regarding chemotherapy side effects and the oncology disease process.
  • Serve as a resource for patients, families, and other health professionals.
  • Triage incoming phone calls from patients and healthcare providers; delegate appropriate calls to CMA.
  • Coordinate chemotherapy orders with physicians.
  • Mix and administer chemotherapy, biotherapy, hydration, and other medications as ordered.
  • Document nursing assessments, patient instruction, and other relevant patient information.
  • Maintain knowledge of reimbursement procedures and accurately document patient charges.
  • Communicate and coordinate with outside agencies to ensure continuity of care.
  • Participate in hospital rounds at the physician’s discretion.
  • Assist the physician on call during weekends as requested.
  • Evaluate laboratory findings appropriately.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Education Requirements

  • Current Iowa Registered Nursing License.
  • Oncology Nursing Certification preferred.
  • Current credentials as required by medical facilities.
  • Current BCLS.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of oncology nursing experience.

Performance Requirements

Knowledge

  • Clinical knowledge of oncology care services and medical management of oncology patients.
  • Medical office operations.
  • Common safety hazards and precautions.
  • Current developments in cancer diagnosis and therapy.
  • CT scans, X-rays, and other relevant diagnostic tests.
  • Company policies and procedures.
  • Computer software used by Mission Cancer + Blood, part of University of Iowa Health Care.
  • HIPAA and confidentiality policies and procedures.

Skills and Abilities

  • Exercise initiative, judgment, discretion, and sound decision-making.
  • Plan and organize work to meet deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Administer chemotherapy and other treatment therapies.
  • Teach clinical and non-clinical personnel regarding care and diagnostic services.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary care team.
  • Demonstrate empathy and compassion with oncology patients.
  • Maintain a pleasant, professional demeanor.
  • Multitask, organize, and prioritize effectively.
  • Utilize community resources for oncology patients.

Organizational Structure

  • Reports to: Assigned Physician and Clinical Operations Officer
  • Direct reports: None

Working Conditions

  • Physical surroundings: Medical office
  • Adverse conditions: Potentially stressful work environment due to patient interaction, long hours, and nature of specialty
  • Physical effort: Walking, bending, standing, reaching, sitting, and lifting up to 15 pounds
  • Local travel: Within the state of Iowa
  • Domestic/International travel: None
  • Extensive hours: Varies based on need
