Exercise Oncology Clinic

The Exercise Oncology Clinic offers free, evidence-based exercise programs designed to help adult cancer patients and survivors at Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center improve strength, functional ability, and symptom management.
  • Learn more

Research shows that regular, structured exercise can help lower the risk of cancer coming back, improve physical strength and mental well‑being, and support better long-term health after cancer. Yet fewer than 10% of cancer survivors in Iowa exercise regularly.

Our Exercise Oncology Clinic — the first of its kind in Iowa — helps close this gap by offering personalized, supervised exercise programs for adults with cancer and cancer survivors. Programs are available both in person and remotely, so patients can receive support at any point in their cancer journey, even if traveling to the clinic isn’t an option.

Who can participate

  • Open to all adult cancer patients and cancer survivors
  • No previous exercise experience required
  • Specialized expertise in supporting:
    • Endometrial cancer survivors
    • Ovarian cancer survivors
    • Rural cancer survivors, including those with limited access to in-person care

What to expect

Participants receive personalized, evidence‑based exercise support designed to meet their individual needs, abilities, and goals throughout the cancer journey. You can expect:

  • An initial assessment to understand your health history, current abilities, and exercise goals
  • A personalized exercise prescription developed specifically for you
  • Specialized, cancer‑focused exercise training based on the latest research
  • Ongoing monitoring and support through in‑person visits or remote sessions
  • Flexible options including group classes, one‑on‑one in‑person support, and remote exercise programming
  • Guidance on safe movement, adaptations, and modifications to make exercise accessible for all abilities
  • All services provided free of charge
