Doing Right (Lady of the Lake Sampler)

Needlework samplers and handmade quilts, common sights in American pioneer homes, inspired this woodcut print. Like this woodcut homage, samplers often included the alphabet, animals, trees and leaves, and complex patterns to demonstrate the creator’s dexterity with a needle and thread. The triangular X shapes found throughout this work were inspired by a quilting pattern called “the lady of the lake,” so-named for its rippling appearance.
