Bird of Paradise Sextant

Based on a constellation first seen by European explorers in the late seventeenth-century, this print depicts the colorful rainforest-dwelling bird in its place in the sky. The constellation is visible in the Southern Hemisphere and is named for the birds that people in India gave to Dutch traders and explorers. Although we cannot see this starry bird in Iowa, we can imagine it by looking at this image.
