Edward Bell receives mentor award from Pediatric Academic Societies

Edward Bell, MD, a neonatologist at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, has been awarded the Maureen Andrew Mentor Award from the Society of Pediatric Research, following his 40 years in pediatric medicine.

The award was established in 2003 to honor the work of Maureen Andrew, MD, a past SPR president whose research introduced developmental hemostasis and led the field of thromboembolic disease in children.

Bell served on the Society of Pediatric Research Council with Andrew in the 1990s and says, “it is a particular honor to receive this award that bears her name.”

“We are all mentors and mentees,” Bell says. “As physicians, our highest priority is caring for our patients, but as academic physicians, teaching and mentoring comes close behind. The opportunity to work with younger colleagues was one of the key attractions to academic medicine for many of us. We want to help develop our young colleagues who will be the leaders and the next generation of mentors. We are links in a chain that tie together the mentors and their knowledge from the past, present, and future.”
