The Hospitalist Care Program at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics was established in 2000 with the hire of two physicians with experience in hospital medicine.
Today, the Hospitalist Program comprises 39 hospitalists, all general internal medicine physicians. These hospitalists work on a variety of inpatient services that include:
- Medicine
- Surgical Co-management
- Acute Cardiology
- Congestive Heart Failure
- Hematology Oncology
The Hospitalist Care Program is supported by both resident and non-resident teams complemented by nurses and nurse practitioners. All of our teams are unit-based putting our hospitalists in close proximity to the patients we care for. Together, we coordinate inpatient care and work collaboratively partnering closely with nursing, social work, case management, pharmacy, and rehabilitation services.
The team works with the patient’s primary medical doctor and community care team. A physician or community provider may contact the Hospitalist Care Program for assistance with any patient admitted to UI Hospitals & Clinics under our service of care.
