Cross-Stitch Compulsion: Work by Maxine Booth Hadfield in the UIHC Collection
August 16, 2023 - November 27, 2023
Madame X
Cross-stitch
UIHC Collection #6809

Maxine Booth Hadfield's cross-stitch creations can be found throughout the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Hadfield donated a collection of 58 cross-stitch artworks; each framed cross-stitch is a reproduction and interpretation of a fine art masterpiece. She began each work by researching the artist and included a brief art history lesson in her own words, often with a tinge of humor and a small item relevant to each piece. Hadfield charted and interpreted each work herself and referred to her art as "fine art with a fine needle." She had completed over 70 different artists' work, some more than once. Each piece involves 200-300 hours of stitching; Hadfield's work within the UIHC Collection represents over thirty years and 14,500 hours of cross-stitching.
