Bunny McBride (1938-2021) earned a BS in Commercial Art and a degree in Art Education, both from Montana State University. After serving in the United States Army as an illustrator, he received an MFA from Alfred University, New York. McBride began teaching at the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History, Ceramics Department in 1970 where he remained until his retirement in 2010.
Many who studied under McBride went on to become dedicated figures in the ceramic community; including the current University of Iowa Ceramics Department exhibiting in the Fountain Lobby (Level 1, Elevator C) through April 15, 2024. The phenomenon of the University of Iowa professors who studied under McBride has been labeled the Iowa Connection by the National Council on the Education of Ceramic Arts (NCECA). NCECA coined this term in 2010 when McBride was honored with the 'Excellence in Teaching Award' at the National Ceramics Educator's Conference in Philadelphia. A common thread throughout McBride's career was his unwavering passion and dedication as a teacher and mentor. He genuinely devoted his professional life to his students, McBride's ardent mentorship can still be felt through those he impassioned.
