IOWA CITY, Iowa – Eighty percent of children who survive their cancer diagnosis may experience a severe or life-threatening condition as a result of their treatment. Stead Family Children’s Hospital has received a $50,000 infrastructure grant from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to help improve the lives of childhood cancer survivors.
The funding from St. Baldrick’s will provide the groundwork to start a dedicated survivorship program at Stead Family Children’s Hospital for childhood cancer survivors who are five years post-treatment. This program will include detailed treatment summaries for survivors, along with screenings and treatment recommendations.
Infrastructure grants are awarded based on the need of the institution and its patients, anticipated results of the grant, and local participation in St. Baldrick’s fundraising events and activities.
This series of grants, combined with the more than $22 million awarded in July, brings the St. Baldrick’s Foundation’s funding total to $24.1 million awarded in 2016.
