Infections
University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital provides consultations and care for children with infectious diseases who are referred to us by their family doctors, pediatricians, and other specialists.
Our pediatric infectious diseases team has the expertise and experience to provide diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and follow-up of children and adolescents with medical issues such as:
- Fever of unknown cause
- Bacterial infections
- Viral infections including HIV care
- Parasitic diseases
- Fungal infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Infections of prosthetic or implanted devices
- Infections after organ transplantation
- Infections related to international adoption
We recognize and understand that a child with an infectious disease can mean stress and uncertainty for parents. Therefore, we make it a priority to ensure that our families are well informed and confident about the care their child receives.
We work closely with doctors who refer their patients to us, and we collaborate with other UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital specialists as needed—drawing on the latest research, technology, and treatments available. It’s the type of care families expect from one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals, and it’s the approach we take with each of our young patients.
Outpatient Pediatric Pre-Travel Consultation and Post-Travel Care
We offer travel medicine services to prepare children for international travel in addition to evaluation of returning travelers with concern for infection. Based on individual risk assessment of anticipated travelers, our team is able to communicate health risks and provide risk management measures, such as immunizations, malaria prophylaxis and other indicated medications.
