Downtown Campus- Emergency Department Volunteer
Unit Description
UI Health Care Downtown Campus Emergency Department Volunteers will see patients from a wide variety of age groups and demographics. The main task of volunteers in this unit is to cater to the needs of the people visiting the Emergency Department in order to make their visit as stress-free as possible. Tasks include assisting Emergency Department staff, conversing with patients, stocking supplies, and clerical tasks. Volunteers in the Emergency Department should be able to work independently and possess strong interpersonal communication skills.
Training
All prospective Emergency Department volunteers will attend a volunteer orientation, where they will receive University of Iowa Health Care volunteering information and then receive training about the Emergency Department, which includes a tour of the area.
Uniform
The dress code for this unit is a Volunteer Services polo, khaki pants, and closed-toe shoes. Shirts are available for purchase at Wild Rose Gifts (University Campus, Main Entrance Lobby) Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Volunteers must follow the professional appearance policy, which includes wearing the volunteer badge at all times.
Hours Available
Four-hour shifts are available Monday-Friday with a time commitment of minimum 3 hours per week. Time shifts include: 11 a.m.- 3 p.m., 3-7 p.m., or 7-11 p.m.

This unit is best suited for anyone who is in a pre-health care field, but it is also a great fit for anyone who is looking for patient interaction and wants to help make being in the hospital a more pleasant experience.
