It is a hormone secreted by the ovarian follicles. It causes:
An increase in cervical mucus
Thickening of vaginal wall
Growth of the endometrium (lining of the uterus)
Estrogen replacement therapy (EstraceĀ®) can be used to mimic a natural menstrual cycle. It is used when the ovaries are not working or have been removed. Menstrual flow may start 48 to 72 hours after stopping estrogen.
What risks are of estrogen therapy?
It should not be used if you have:
Known or suspected breast cancer
Known or suspected estrogen-dependent tumor
An active blood clotting disorder
What are the side effects?
The most common complaint is nausea. Other side effects are:
Changes in menstrual flow
You may have breakthrough bleeding with prolonged doses.
Breast changes, such as tenderness, enlargement, or secretion
Headache
Blood clotting problems
High blood pressure
Fluid retention
Mood swings
Tell your care team right away if you have any of the above side effects.
