Guest Services Lobby Transport Volunteer
Unit Description
The Guest Services Lobby Transport position offers prospective student volunteers a valuable opportunity to assist patients and visitors at key entrance points of UIHC: the Main Entrance, Stead Family Children’s Hospital, Pomerantz Family Pavilion Level 1, and Level 2. Volunteers primarily help escort patients to their clinic appointments, either by wheelchair or walking with them, deliver personal belongings and gifts to inpatient units, and assist with wayfinding throughout the hospital.
Volunteers work closely with Guest Services Patient Escorts and Information Desk staff, supporting smooth transitions for patients and visitors. This includes being available for patient or visitor handoffs at entrances, following staff directions, and ensuring that wheelchairs are stocked and ready for use. Note that student volunteers are not permitted to manage complex patient transports or use hospital communication systems.
This role offers frequent opportunities for patient and visitor interaction, making strong communication skills and a welcoming presence essential. As one of the first faces patients and families see, volunteers are expected to engage warmly and professionally with all guests.
Training
All first-time Guest Services volunteers must attend a small group orientation before beginning independent shifts. During orientation, volunteers are introduced to key areas of the hospital they may transport to, and receive hands-on training in essential skills, such as wheelchair handling, delivery procedures for gifts and mail, and navigation tips. Volunteers will continue with mentor-led shifts until they feel confident and prepared to work independently.
Uniform
The required uniform includes a Volunteer Services polo, khaki pants, and closed-toed shoes. Polo shirts can be purchased at Wild Rose Gifts (located in the Main Entrance Lobby) during store hours: Monday–Friday: 7AM –8 PM, Saturday–Sunday: 10 AM – 6 PM. Volunteers must also adhere to the professional appearance policy, including always wearing their volunteer ID badge.
Hours Available
