Main Operating Room/SSRF, ECT Volunteer
Unit Description
This unit is divided into two subunits: Second Stage Recovery (SSR), and Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Volunteers in SSR will closely assist nursing staff with transporting patients, keeping patients' company after surgery, offering food and drink to patients when appropriate, and cleaning and restocking rooms. Volunteers in ECT work alongside nurses to help psychiatric patients recover following ETC procedures. Duties include connecting patients to monitors, patient repositioning, stripping patient beds, stocking, and cleaning surfaces between patients. Volunteers in this unit should have good communication skills and be able to work independently and take initiative.
Training
All prospective volunteers will attend a large group orientation, where they will receive general University of Iowa Health Care information. Volunteers will also attend small group orientation to receive training and information specific to their subunit. Finally, all volunteers must spend a complete shift with an experienced volunteer mentor before “earning their wings” (more information about the mentor program will be provided during orientation).
Uniform
The dress code for ECT and SSR is a Volunteer Services polo, khaki pants, and closed-toe shoes. Shirts are available for purchase at Wild Rose Gifts (Main Entrance Lobby) Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Hours Available
SSR is open to volunteers Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. ECT is open to volunteers Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
