"I had a compound fracture of my tibia and fibula. The emergency surgery included a plate and eight screws and staples down my lower left leg. When a one centimeter hole would not heal closed, even after applying a wound vac for a month, they sent me to University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.
The UI team did three surgeries to correct my leg. There was an infection that hadn’t reached the bone yet but wouldn’t let the leg heal. They did the first surgery and removed the plate and applied a device to correct the angle of my foot from the emergency surgery. My foot was in the 10 o’clock position when looking down. They fixed that and cleaned out the infection and did two more surgeries, installing a rod down my lower leg through the knee. Due to my condition they also had to do a muscle flap and vein transfer and skin graft.
I fully realize that a lot of people lose their leg in this situation. I couldn’t be happier with Dr. Michael Willey and the entire team and every nurse and assistant nurse involved. Well done.
Special thanks to Jenny and Ericka (great nurses)."
