Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) is an effective treatment for those who struggle to navigate day-to-day life due to mental health conditions affecting emotional regulation.
STEPPS is a 22-week evidence-based educational program in group format designed to teach individuals about the behaviors and feelings that describe their disorder, as well as skills to better manage emotions, thoughts and behaviors.
What is STEPPS?
Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS), is a manualized, cognitive-behavioral, skills-based group treatment program, originally developed as an adjunctive treatment for outpatients with borderline personality disorder. Developed by UIHC providers in 1995 to help patients struggling with borderline personality disorder (emotional intensity), STEPPS has broadened to include anyone holding a mental health diagnosis that may cause difficulty regulating emotions and managing behaviors. STEPPS uses a structured approach to emotional problem solving, integrating cognitive behavioral therapy, emotion regulation, skills training, and psychoeducation. The weekly group actively engages healthcare professionals, family members, friends, and other significant supports of individuals struggling with emotional intensity. The goal is to provide self-understanding, tools and skills to enable participants to gain better control of their emotional experience, ultimately improving quality of life.
Key components of STEPPS therapy
Psychoeducation: Provides information about the disorder and its effects.
Emotion management skills training: Teaches strategies to better understand and control emotional responses.
Behavior management skills training: Focuses on developing healthier behaviors and ways to handle challenging situations.
Systems component: Involves educating family members and other support figures to help them better support the individual.
