Level 11 is dedicated entirely to the University of Iowa Dance Marathon Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. There are 18 private inpatient rooms. One patient per room enhances rest, privacy and promotes healing by helping prevent infection. Large windows in every room let in natural light.

The UI Dance Marathon Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center provides comprehensive care for pediatric hematology and oncology patients, supporting both inpatient and outpatient care on the 11th floor. The center includes our Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) program, the only pediatric BMT program in the state of Iowa. The name of our cancer center recognizes the generous support of UI Dance Marathon, whose $5 million pledge was the lead gift for the children’s hospital building campaign.

Getting there: Take the public elevators to Level 11; look for the purple kite icon. Enter the clinic on the right. To you left you will find the inpatient unit. For the safety of all patients and visitors all inpatient units are secured to request entry, call the unit clerk from the phone in the elevator lobby. Once admitted to the unit, visitors must wash their hands as directed.

Helpful resources for patients and families while on Level 11

The UI Dance Marathon Pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center was designed for the comfort and convenience of patients and families to help reduce stress during what can be an anxious time. Newly diagnosed patients can tour the outpatient clinic before being discharged from a hospital stay to gain familiarity with the center and the care team to help lessen anxiety.  

Level 11 has 18 total Hematology / Oncology and BMT inpatient rooms. The clinic side has intake, exam, and infusion rooms, and accommodates up to full day infusions. For safety, each patient room is equipped with a positive air pressure and its own high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. These highly effective air filters provide an extra line of defense against germs. 

Each inpatient room will be divided into three areas. The care team zone includes a sink and access to supplies. The patient zone includes the patient’s bed, OneView TV (a interactive education and entertainment system for patients and families, and a colorful lighting system known as Drew’s Lamp. The family zone includes a sleeping area to support two adults. A nearby recliner lays flat for sleeping and has a glider feature for soothing patients and siblings.

Each family zone also includes a TV for the family and lights that can be controlled separately from other lights in the room. All rooms include a locking storage cabinet and a refrigerator, both for family use. 

Rooms are the same handed in design, meaning that the room layout is identical in every patient room on this level. As a result, beds will never share a common wall, cutting down on noise transfer between rooms. The layout improves staff efficiencies and patient safety so staff can focus more readily on patients.
