Why did you decide to become a doctor?

My decision to become a doctor developed from my early interest in science and my desire to make a meaningful difference in people's lives. I was particularly drawn to medicine because it combines scientific knowledge with human connection. Over the years, I have realized that being a physician is not simply about diagnosing and treating illness, it is about listening to patients and families, building trust, and being there for them during challenging times.

What drew you to pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology?

Pediatric gastroenterology appealed to me because it is a field that requires both broad clinical knowledge and curiosity. Many children with complex gastrointestinal disorders present with challenging and sometimes unexplained symptoms, and finding the underlying cause can make a profound difference in their lives.

I have been practicing pediatric gastroenterology for 20 years, and my interests have continued to evolve. I am particularly interested in inflammatory bowel disease, especially early-onset and very-early-onset IBD, as well as congenital diarrheas, enteropathies, and monogenic intestinal diseases.

What is your interest in research?

I am especially interested in rare and complex gastrointestinal diseases and in understanding the mechanisms underlying these conditions. I believe research is most meaningful when it ultimately improves patient care. I enjoy collaborating with colleagues across institutions and countries, contributing to multicenter studies, and learning from other experts.

What attracted you to the University of Iowa?

I was attracted to the University of Iowa because of its strong commitment to clinical excellence, education, research, and collaboration. I was also impressed by the welcoming and collegial environment and the opportunity to work with physicians and researchers from many different specialties.

What is the best part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is seeing a child improve and watching a family regain hope. I also enjoy the intellectual challenge of caring for children with complex and rare diseases, especially when the diagnosis is not immediately obvious.

I value teaching and mentoring as much as patient care. I enjoy sharing what I have learned with trainees and colleagues, but I also believe that teaching is a two-way process. Working with younger physicians keeps me curious and encourages me to continue learning.

Ultimately, what I value most about pediatric gastroenterology is the opportunity to combine patient care, research, education, and collaboration. My goal is to provide compassionate, evidence-based care while continuing to learn and contribute to the field so that we can improve the lives of children with gastrointestinal diseases.
