Female Reproductive System

Our experienced caregivers in the Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Clinic offer sensitive care for common and uncommon gynecologic matters for girls and young women from birth to age 22. We recognize what is normal and abnormal for infants, children, and teenagers. Our patients are examined in an age-appropriate, sensitive and reassuring way. We believe it is important to communicate effectively with young people and their parents or guardians.

Girls between the ages of 11 and 13 (or within a year of her first period) should have an adolescent wellness visit to discuss the changes going on in their bodies. Our caregivers want to be your resource to help educate girls about menstruation, sexuality and relationships, pregnancy, sexually transmitted infection prevention, nutrition, and body image. We also offer vaccination updates, including the HPV vaccine.

Although it’s not common, some girls may be born with, or develop, gynecological problems. These may include vulvar or vaginal abnormalities, such as heavy bleeding, bleeding, or discharge before puberty, or lesions on genitalia, as well as physical abnormalities of the uterus, cervix, or vagina. In some cases, we may recommend that she be seen in conjunction with colleagues from our Vulvovaginal Disease Clinic, Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic, or Pediatric Hematology Clinic.
