Pediatric Hospital Medicine
A pediatric hospitalist is a board-certified pediatrician who specializes in caring for hospitalized infants and children. Our hospitalists are like an extension of your pediatric primary care provider, except we care for children sick enough to be in the hospital, instead of a clinic setting. In fact, we often work with your local pediatrician to discuss your child’s health history and care plan.
Hospital Medicine at Iowa’s only comprehensive children’s hospital
As part of the state’s only comprehensive academic medical center, the hospitalists at Stead Family Children’s Hospital closely collaborate with many pediatric subspecialists, including pediatric surgeons and pediatric pharmacists. We are well equipped to care for all children from routine hospital stays in the newborn nursery to more complex or serious illnesses.
We are also lucky to have the largest team of child life specialists in Iowa to make kids more comfortable in a hospital setting.
Going home
When your child is ready to be discharged from the hospital, our care team shares a comprehensive summary of your child’s hospitalization with your primary care provider. When needed, we will help arrange follow-up visits and share your child’s care plan with outpatient providers.
If any pediatric subspecialty follow-up visits are needed at Stead Family Children’s Hospital, our team will work with you to get your child's appointments scheduled.
