The Young Child Psychiatry Clinic at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital cares for children from ages 2 to 4 who are experiencing:

  • Anxiety
  • Attachment problems
  • Inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity
  • Family separations and losses
  • History of maltreatment or trauma
  • Irritability
  • Mood problems
  • Oppositional behavior

As a parent, you are a vital part of your child’s mental health care team, and you are a partner as we explore the best treatment options for your child.

Before an appointment is scheduled, we would prefer hearing from you or your child’s doctor to determine if our care is the right fit for you and your child. For confidentiality reasons, we ask that you inquire by phone.

The psychologist typically meets with you and your child over two appointments. Each appointment will last about 90 minutes. A follow-up appointment with the psychiatrist will be scheduled when needed.

We will review medical records and ask you some questions about your child as well as complete some psychological testing and observe your child’s behavior. We will share our findings and make recommendations for next steps, including any follow-up care to be provided through our services or resources in your community.
