These instructions will help you prepare during the week leading up to your penile implant procedure.
Reducing the risk of infection
During your pre-operative visit you will receive an antibiotic wash. Use this wash the night before your surgery and again on the morning of your surgery before you leave for the hospital. Scrub your entire genital region thoroughly with this wash.
Packing for your hospital stay
On the day of surgery, you can wear whatever is most comfortable for you. After you check in to the hospital you will be given a hospital gown. If you have some special socks or slippers you like to wear, bring those with you.
If you have a special pillow or blanket that will make your overnight stay more comfortable, you may bring them.
Bring whatever you need to keep entertained during a hospital stay, including a good book, a cell phone, or an iPad. But avoid bringing anything more than you’re sure you’ll need so that you can avoid losing items during your stay.
Things you’ll need after surgery
There are some things you’ll want to make sure you have available as soon as you get home after surgery. Save yourself some trouble and get these before your surgery instead of waiting until you need them.
You’ll want to have an ice pack ready to control swelling in the area. If you already have an ice pack, have it chilled and ready ahead of time. If you don’t have an ice pack, stop at the grocery store and get a bag of frozen peas. It’s a great alternative and does the job just as well.
You’ll also want to buy a pack of inexpensive cotton underwear. Get briefs that will support your scrotum as it heals. Sometimes the incision can leak some fluid in the days after surgery, so buy briefs you don’t mind staining or throwing away after use.
