Low oxygen levels before extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
If your loved one had low levels of oxygen before ECMO, there is a risk for damage to the brain and other organs. Unfortunately, these problems can only be detected as time passes.
Needing extra oxygen after ECMO discharge
Your loved one may also need extra oxygen when they go home. If oxygen is needed, we will give you special training before you go home.
Feeding babies after ECMO
Some babies have problems with sucking and swallowing after being on ECMO. We don’t know why this happens but it can go away on its own. Nurses and occupational therapists can help you learn the correct way to feed your child.
