Managing BPH and ED: What Every Man Should Know About Symptoms and Treatment
Discover effective treatments for a healthier, more confident you

Healthy aging and dealing with BPH and ED
As you age, your body goes through many changes. Some of them can impact your daily life and overall well-being. Two common conditions that affect men as they get older are benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and erectile dysfunction (ED). While these issues can be frustrating, they are manageable with the right knowledge and care. We spoke with Amanda Swanton, MD, a urologist specializing in men’s health, to answer some of the most common questions about BPH and ED.
What is BPH and how does it affect you
BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia, is the medical term for an enlarged prostate.
“As the prostate gets larger, it can press against the urethra, making it harder for urine to flow properly,” Swanton says. This can lead to symptoms such as:
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Weak or slow urine stream
- Difficulty starting or stopping urination
- Feeling like your bladder is never fully empty
What causes BPH?
Some may have more symptoms than others.
“Most men will experience some degree of prostate enlargement as they age,” Swanton explains. “While it is not cancerous, symptoms can still impact your quality of life and should be managed appropriately.”
How is BPH treated?
Fortunately, there are multiple ways to manage BPH. Treatments range from lifestyle changes to medication and, in some cases, minimally invasive procedures. Here are some common approaches:
- Lifestyle changes. Reducing caffeine and alcohol, staying active, and avoiding drinking fluids before bed can help lessen symptoms.
- Medications. Alpha-blockers, phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors, and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors can help relax the prostate or shrink it over time.
- Surgical and minimally invasive options. Numerous options exist and depend on prostate size. Many procedures can be performed endoscopically through the urethra (without incisions on the body).
What is erectile dysfunction (ED)?
Erectile dysfunction, or ED, is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough for sexual activity.
“It’s important to understand that ED is very common, and it’s not just a part of getting older,” Swanton says. “There are many factors that can contribute to it, including underlying health conditions, stress, and even certain medications.”
What causes ED?
ED can have both physical and psychological causes, including:
- Heart disease or high blood pressure
- Diabetes
- Low testosterone levels
- Anxiety, depression, or stress
- Side effects from medications
- Prior pelvic surgery
What are the treatment options for ED?
The good news is that ED is treatable, and there are many options to help improve sexual function. Common treatments include:
- Medications. Drugs like sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis) help increase blood flow to the penis.
- Lifestyle changes. Exercising, maintaining a healthy weight, and quitting smoking can improve ED symptoms.
- Therapy. If stress or anxiety is a contributing factor, counseling can help address psychological barriers.
- Medical devices or procedures. In some cases, vacuum erection devices or penile implants may be options.
Can you prevent BPH and ED?
While you can’t completely prevent BPH or ED, certain lifestyle choices can help decrease symptoms or delay their onset. Some tips include:
- Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins
- Staying physically active and maintaining a healthy weight
- Managing stress through relaxation techniques like meditation or deep breathing
- Avoiding excessive alcohol consumption and quitting smoking
- Regular health check-ups to catch potential issues early
When should you see a doctor?
If you’re experiencing symptoms of BPH or ED that affect your quality of life, it’s important to speak with a health care provider.
“There are many effective treatments available, so don’t be embarrassed to ask for help,” Swanton emphasizes.
By taking an active role in your health, you can manage these conditions and continue to enjoy a fulfilling and active life.
