A New Chapter for the Health of our Community

For a century and a half, the University of Iowa and Mercy Iowa City served the health care needs of patients in Iowa City and beyond, focused on bringing accessible health care to Iowans.

That same spirit and commitment to service brought the two organizations together on Jan. 31, 2024, to create University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown.

A new era in our history honors the past while looking to the future with the following commitments:

Open medical staff model

Community providers not employed by UI Health Care continue to practice at the downtown campus under an open medical staff model, a new endeavor for the university which historically employed all providers.

Community advisory board

An advisory board comprised primarily of independent members of the community discusses health care needs and opportunities for the downtown campus.

Vacation and sick leave

Employees who transitioned to UI Health Care received an hour-for-hour transfer of paid time off to vacation up to a maximum of 384 hours. For example, an employee that had 50.5 hours of paid time off transitioned to a balance of 50.5 hours of vacation at UI Health Care.

Employment offers

Offers of employment were made to all who were in good standing with Mercy Iowa City, and nearly all of those offers were accepted. A probationary period is a standard university practice for those who have accepted new positions. While the period length may vary by role, most probationary periods range from six to nine months to ensure an employee is able to perform at a level consistent with university standards set for the position.

Downtown campus administrator

A senior-level leader heads operations at the downtown campus. Jennifer Miller is the chief administrative officer.

Infrastructure investments

University of Iowa made a commitment to invest at least $25 million in initial infrastructure improvements for downtown campus over the next five years. There was also a commitment to make strategic investments, including transitioning to Epic as the electronic medical record system, allowing for more coordinated patient care.
