About

Aleksander Lenert, MD, MS, is an adult rheumatologist and Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Immunology at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Rheumatology Fellowship at Cleveland Clinic.

His clinical interests are in the diagnosis and management of adults with autoinflammatory syndromes (i.e. periodic fever syndromes) and systemic vasculitis. Specifically, Lenert has expertise in the care of patients with adult onset Still’s disease (AOSD), familial mediterranean fever (FMF), Behçet’s disease, periodic fever with aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis, and adenitis (PFAPA) and other autoinflammatory syndromes.

In collaboration with his mentor, Polly Ferguson, MD, Lenert is forming a specialized clinic for the management of adult patients with inflammatory bone diseases, focused on the comprehensive care of adult patients with chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO, or chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis) and SAPHO (synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis).

Additionally, Lenert has expertise in the management of patients with systemic vasculitis, including granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), giant cell arteritis (GCA), Takayasu's arteritis, and other rare forms of vasculitis.

In his research, Lenert is interested in leveraging big data from large EMRs and administrative databases for clinical and translational research. Lenert’s research focuses on characterizing multi-morbidity, severe lung disease, and cardiovascular outcomes in AOSD and related autoinflammatory syndromes. Additionally, Lenert has an interest in conducting comparative effectiveness studies of traditional DMARDs and novel IL-1 inhibitors in AOSD and related autoinflammatory syndromes
