Embodied Algorithms: The Humanness of Dancing with Robots

Amenda Tate is an interdisciplinary artist utilizing both scientific and aesthetic processes. She uses custom-designed technology, painting, performance, installation, and curated social interactions to foster connection. Tate's work encourages audiences to think about their relationship to one another in an ever-present digital world.
In Latin, the word manibus means "from the hand". Tate created her Manibus robotic painting device to utilize as an extension of the artist's own hand. A dancer wears a motion-sensing remote directing Manibus to render an artistic depiction of motion; therefore translating the movement of dance into observable abstract representations of what has transpired. The lingering traces are mapped connections facilitated by social interaction, art, engineering, and technology.
