Rooted in artist books and printmaking, the work of Jennifer Scheuer explores themes of healing, the body, plants, and the history of medicine. These artworks cultivate Scheuer’s modern exploration of “The Doctrine of Signatures”; a historic concept that the natural world provides visual signs of similarity between plants and the parts of the body they are used to heal. Like the Mullein herb for respiratory health or the Ginger plant for the digestive system, plants of the natural world are a perennial garden of medical knowledge.
