Jennifer Scheuer's studio practice explores themes of healing, the body, plants, and the history of medicine. Much of her work is rooted in artist books and printmaking, where she has engaged with the historical concept of "The Doctrine of Signatures." This idea, present across various time periods and cultures, suggests that the natural world provides visual cues of similarity - such as plants resembling parts of the body - implying their potential use in healing.
Jennifer Scheuer is a visual artist and printmaker based in Lafayette, Indiana. She serves as an Assistant Professor in the Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance at Purdue University. A recipient of the 2022 DeHaan Artist of Distinction Award from the Indianapolis Arts Council, Scheuer has participated in artist residencies across the U.S. and internationally, including California, Ohio, Vermont, Virginia, Massachusetts, Canada, Poland, and Germany.
Her work is widely exhibited in national and international shows. Scheuer earned her MFA in Studio Arts: Printmaking from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and completed the Tamarind Institute Printer Training Program. She has long been passionate about paper sculpture and book arts, recently directing her creative focus toward artist books. Her studio practice is deeply rooted in collections, archives, and research.
