"Stick Stack Mint Rack"
Colored porcelain, PC-11, granite tile, 2021
Reminiscent dreamscapes encompassing colorful, fantastical architecture; Sydney Ewerth's sculptures attempt to communicate through the senses. Emitting a yearning to create physical dialogue between lived and imagined space - Ewerth's imagined space houses historic memory and the inevitable distortion of memory over time.
She explores the seriousness in the silly; a humorous façade masking coy, obsessive behaviors. Ewerth's utilization of gratuitous loud materials alters there rigid structures into a playfully vulnerable narrative. The physical mapping of line and shadow reflects dissonant repetition and the artist's interpretation of the true and secret self. Examining how shadows shadows can manipulate our understanding and recognition of space and form, she looks to define what inhabits the distance imposed between two points. Ewerth hopes to provide evidence of the presence of the physical manifestations of growth and time.
Sydney Ewerth received her BFA from Augusta University and her MFA from the University of Alabama. She is currently teaching at the Univeristy of Iowa as the Iowa Idea Visiting Assistant Professor in Ceramics.
