By manipulating the size, texture, and composition of everyday items, artist Perla Camacho invites personal reflection and curiosity. How does the viewer relate to an object? What should be considered about an object in addition to its existence and basic use? Camacho states, “I require empathy from the viewer to look beyond the obvious and trace the stories embedded in ordinary objects, like tablets or faucets.” These questions begin a vulnerable dialogue between the object, the viewer, and the artist, rooted in the practice of Radical Tenderness; a concept steeped in openness while navigating the difficult.
For Camacho, the meditative rhythm of ceramics provides a path through living with chronic pain; “All the swirling emotions from the external chaos in my mind are contained, like a fragile bird, in the space between my hands.” The artworks created reveal more than a diagnosis, rather they initiate a conversation of care and re-existence on a personal level and as a human society.
Perla Camacho, a Mexican ceramic sculpture artist, graduated from the University of Veracruz in 2017. Approaching art from an eco-humanist perspective, Camacho makes personal inquiries into everyday objects- translating them into figurative pieces using texture, scale, and alteration to create more complex narratives. By doing so, she invites the viewer to look with empathy and connect with kindness.
Camacho is currently an MFA candidate at the University of Iowa.
