COVID-19 Vaccines

UI Health Care offers COVID-19 vaccination for various doses, age groups, and manufacturers. Explore below the options and eligibility criteria associated with each one.

Primary series doses are vaccinations that build your initial immunity. They are usually administered within weeks of each other.

Booster doses are vaccinations that help to increase your immunity, after it may have waned from your primary series.  These doses are usually administered many months after your primary series.

First Dose (Primary Series)

UI Health Care primarily offers the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine but has limited availability of Moderna.  

You can discuss manufacturer selection with your clinic at the point of vaccination. 

For children under the age of 18: 

If you would like your child to receive the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, please select the “UI Health Care–Iowa River Landing” location for your appointment. 

Age: 6 Month - 4 Years

Parental or guardian consent is required for a vaccination appointment for those under the age of 18. A parent or guardian must accompany the minor to their vaccination appointment to provide consent. If the minor is not accompanied by a parent or guardian, we will be unable to provide the vaccination.

Second Dose (Primary Series)

Pfizer-BioNTech

Age: 6 month - 4 Years

Please make sure to select a date that is at least 21 days after your child received their first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

Johnson & Johnson (Janssen)

Age: 18+

UI Health Care is not currently offering doses of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine. 

If you have previously received the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine and would like to schedule a second (booster) dose, please contact a local pharmacy. 

Third Dose (Primary Series)

Only children ages 6 months to 4 years old who received Pfizer-BioNTech as their first and second dose need a third dose in their primary series.

Pfizer-BioNTech

Age: 6 Months - 4 Years

Please make sure to select a date that is at least 8 weeks after your child received their second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

Additional Dose (for those who are moderately to severely immunocompromised)

People are considered moderately to severely immunocompromised if: 

  • Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors, or cancers of the blood 
  • Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system 
  • Received a stem cell transplant within the last 2 years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system 
  • Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome) 
  • Advanced or untreated HIV infection 
  • Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response

Second Booster Dose

Second boosters are now available for certain populations. These populations are primarily limited to people age 50 and older, or those who are moderately to severely immunocompromised.

You are eligible for a second booster dose if it has been at least four months since your first booster 

AND 

You are considered moderately to severely immunocompromised.
