Program Description

The Critical Care Paramedic Education Program was developed at the EMS Learning Resources Center in 1996 (and updated 2017) and has gained national recognition. It is designed for experienced paramedics and offers hands-on critical care instruction.

This intensive, 94-hour program includes classroom instruction, hands-on labs and clinical observation (24 hours) and covers a wide variety of topics. This meets Iowa state requirements for Critical Care Paramedic endorsement and meets national preparation requirements for certification exams for EMS critical care.

This course will meet on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day for three weeks.

Eligibility Requirements

Participants must:

  • Be a national standard paramedic (nationally registered or paramedic in Iowa) or RN
  • Should have two years of EMS experience
  • Be current in ACLS
  • Have had PHTLS certification at least once in their career

Iowa Endorsement

Upon successful completion of all the training program's requirements, individuals may apply for Critical Care Paramedic Endorsement attached to their Paramedic Certification in the state of Iowa. 

Continuing Education

The University of Iowa EMS Learning Resources Center awards 94 CEHs (70 formal hours and 24 informal) for students who complete the entire course.
