Family history and heart disease
A family history of heart disease could mean you are at greater risk
Knowing your family’s health history is important when it comes to your overall health and understanding your risk of heart disease.
Different types of heart disease and related conditions–like high blood pressure and high cholesterol– can run in families. Knowing this background is one of the first steps to preventing heart disease.
Conditions that could increase your risk of heart disease:
- Coronary artery disease or atherosclerosis
- Heart attack
- High cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Angina
- Heart arrhythmias
- Cardiomyopathy
- Congenital heart defects
- Heart failure
- Stroke
- Diabetes
Just because your family has a history of heart disease, stroke, or diabetes does not mean you will have the same conditions; it just means you should keep an eye on your heart health with the help of your provider.
If you have questions or concerns, schedule an appointment with your provider. They can go over your family health history and provide next steps to live a healthy life.
