The University of Iowa Heart and Vascular Center’s general cardiologists care for a wide range of patients from across the state. We routinely:
- Evaluate people who are worried about first-time symptoms like chest pain and shortness of breath
- Order cardiac imaging and other tests to confirm or rule out cardiovascular conditions
- Prescribe medications or lifestyle changes to prevent, improve, or reverse symptoms
- Provide referrals for advanced treatments like cardiac ablation, heart surgery, or heart transplant
- Teach people about their cardiovascular risk factors and how to reduce them
- Help interested and eligible patients enroll in clinical trials to test new medications or devices
The sooner you partner with a cardiologist, the quicker we can identify the earliest signs of heart disease and get you on the path to better health.
Prompt evaluation and treatment
We see patients with new or worsening symptoms as quickly as possible. In most cases, we can schedule your appointment within seven days of your doctor’s referral.
Ongoing cardiovascular care tailored to you
We offer many services for patients who need advanced testing, ongoing monitoring, or other support. These include:
- Advanced lipid monitoring: We help people with hard-to-treat cholesterol or familial hypercholesterolemia (a genetic disorder) reduce their risk of heart attack and stroke.
- Cardio-oncology: We help prevent or treat certain heart problems commonly caused by chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other cancer treatments.
- Cardiovascular genetics: We offer genetic testing, counseling, and personalized treatments to people who have, or are at risk for, heart problems that run in families.
- Device monitoring: We monitor patients with pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) to make sure the device works properly
Our approach to cardiology care
Many of our patients improve their heart disease symptoms with nonsurgical treatments. These include:
- Losing weight
- Eating better
- Getting more exercise
- Quitting smoking
- Medications to manage high blood pressure or high cholesterol or reduce risk of stroke
Once we get your condition under control, you may only need to see your cardiologist once each year for a check-up.
But if lifestyle changes or medicine aren’t enough to control your symptoms, we’ll make sure you get the advanced care you need. Our cardiologists work closely with many other cardiovascular experts. These experts offer specialized treatments, including:
