Information for intersex individuals

The University of Iowa LGBTQ clinic welcomes intersex individuals.

The UI LGBTQ clinic is committed to providing culturally competent care to all persons identifying as intersex. If necessary, we will work closely with our colleagues in the UI Department of Pediatric Endocrinology, UI Department of OB-GYN, and/or UI Department of Urology to meet your health care needs.



  1. general term for biologic variations of chromosomes, organs and/or external genitalia that is not distinctly male or female. The outdated term for this is hermaphrodite. Intersex people may or may not identify as queer or transgender.  
  2. other commonly used terms for intersex are disorders of sexual development (DSD) or variations of sexual development (VSD).
