UI Hospitals & Clinics is holding a 40th birthday celebration for AirCare from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at the Iowa City Municipal Airport, 1801 S. Riverside Drive, Iowa City.

Everyone is welcome to the open house, which will feature tours of AirCare helicopters and the newest addition to the hospital’s air ambulance services, a fixed-wing aircraft with range to transport patients from anywhere in Iowa and neighboring states. AirCare operates three helicopters, two ambulances, and one airplane.

If you or your family have been touched by AirCare anytime in its 40-year history, we’d love to hear your story. We invite you to send us details of your AirCare experience using our online Share Your Story tool. With your permission, we’ll share your story at the event.

We also have a special recognition in store for AirCare patients attending the event.

AirCare’s first flight was April 1, 1979, becoming the country’s 11th EMS helicopter program. Over the years, our aircraft have flown more than 30,000 patients a total of 3 million miles. Last year, our air services, located in Iowa City, Dubuque, and Waterloo, transported more than 900 patients for emergency care.

Other AirCare distinctions:

  • It is the first flight program in the state with an emergency medicine residency program.
  • It is the state’s only flight program to supplement its on-board medical crew with physicians.
  • It collaborates with 100 emergency medical service, fire, and law enforcement programs in the region.
