University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital is home to one of the most experienced and comprehensive pediatric neurosurgery programs in the nation and the only nationally ranked program in Iowa.
Our pediatric neurosurgeons are recognized as leaders in the field and experts at treating children with conditions affecting the brain, and spinal cord, including the most complex pediatric neurosurgical cases.
Neurological problems in children who need surgery can be very different from those in adults. That’s why it’s important to rely on the expertise of pediatric neurosurgeons who are specially trained to treat infants, children, and adolescents. Also, many pediatric neurological conditions require lifelong follow-up care, so we work closely with young patients and their families to ensure their comfort and earn their trust. That’s why physicians refer patients to us from throughout the state, across the nation, and around the world.
UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital is internationally recognized for both clinical expertise and research in pediatric neurosurgery. We have developed and refined the use of minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of many pediatric neurosurgical conditions.
Considering a second opinion?
If you have been told that your child needs neurosurgery, it is important to consider every alternative. That's why we offer a second opinion program, which gives you access to the world-class pediatric neurosurgeons at UI Children’s Hospital.
There are several reasons to seek a second opinion. Some children may have already had surgery and are experiencing new symptoms. In other cases, the family may want to know if their child’s medication regimen is the best for them. We also see families who want to explore every option and seek the latest advancements in surgical and medical diagnosis and treatment for their child.
Our second opinion program was created for children diagnosed with any general pediatric neurosurgical condition and for families who have been told that their child needs a neurosurgical procedure for Chiari, disorders of the craniovertebral junction, epilepsy, brain tumors, craniosynostosis, spina bifida, hydrocephalus, and other conditions.
Please be assured that we will coordinate appointments and follow-up care based on your specific needs. Our doctors will explain your child’s medical condition, answer questions and help you understand your options, and customize a care plan specifically for your child. If your child currently does not have a pediatrician, we can help connect you with our team of pediatric experts, as well.
