About E. Michael Powers

The University of Iowa is a wonderful institution that affords me the resources and technology to tackle the toughest heart rhythm disorders. The state of Iowa is filled with wonderful citizens but unfortunately not enough heart rhythm specialists. I relish the opportunity to mobilize the university's resources for restoring quality of life to Iowans by fixing their heart rhythm issues.

Michael Powers, MD, MBA, is an adult cardiac electrophysiologist who specializes in treating patients with heart arrhythmias. He treats many heart rhythm conditions, including atrial fibrillation (Afib), supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), ventricular tachycardia, and more. He is an expert at treating these conditions through minimally invasive cardiac ablations and implantable devices. He also specializes in managing broken and infected implanted devices. 

He is involved in research on studying the factors that promote infection in pacemakers and defibrillators, better understanding fibrosis to the heart and vascular structures, and ways to prevent complications during lead extractions. 

Dr. Powers received his medical degree from Vanderbilt School of Medicine, before completing his residency at Duke University. He completed fellowships in cardiovascular disease at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics and clinical cardiac electrophysiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
