About James M. Blum

I joined the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics because of its core mission and values embracing innovation, safety, and excellence. It is through my administrative roles, clinical practice, and research that I seek to contribute to change medicine and change lives. Being a patient is complex and filled with risk from deciding with your physician a course of treatment to managing side effects. Finding ways to improve this dynamic is a key focus. It is my underlying passion for innovation and the use of technology to improve the care we deliver that brings me to work everyday.

James Blum, MD received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and completed his residency in Anesthesiology and fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Michigan. He serves as the Chief Health Information Officer for University of Iowa Health Care and as an active member of the clinical faculty in the ORs and ICUs. Dr. Blum is also a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) with HIMS certification, which enables him to assist with navigating even the most complex clinical cases for pilots. As a commercially certificated pilot, Dr. Blum understands the unique needs of airmen seeking aviation medical advice.
